Interesting discussion.

Trump's foreign policy is no divergence from the Obama administration. According to oil-price.net both Russia and the U.S. are siding with Shia and Sunni lines respectively to get oil pipeline access through Syria to Europe: www.oil-price.net/en/articles/oil-prices...syrian-civil-war.php

The U.S. and the Sunnis such as the Saudis and the Qataris, want Assad gone but Russia and the Shias want Assad in to further their agendas.
I.S.I.S. is a threat to both groups hence why the U.S. and Russia agreed at the U.N. in 2015 to team up against I.S.I.S.
Afterwards they will likely continue the proxy war.

Think Mr. Townsend is right that Trump will go after I.S.I.S., especially since he stated during his campaign that they would defeat I.S.I.S. and take the oil.

One note though is that in the beginning of the podcast Erik mentioned that no one is advocating printing money exclusively to finance government expenditures but MMTers such as Warren Mosler advocate precisely that.
