Macro Voices Discussion Forum

The investment world is full of scam artists and con men, and one of their favorite tricks is to join an investment-related forum like this one, warm up to other users on that forum, then try to run some kind of scam on them. Hello, all!

The purpose of this thread is to provide a space for our listeners to introduce themselves to the members of this community. So, please tell us a little about yourself, and how you found out about us.

I'll start -

My name is Nathan Egger, and I'm the producer and co-host of MacroVoices. We've got big aspirations regarding this project, and I am really looking forward to getting to know you all, and hearing feedback from you on how we can improve the show and the forums so that we can bring you the very best content, and a community with which to discuss the show. I'll be moderating these forums, so you will be able to contact me here, or if you prefer, you can email me directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. Hey Nathan -

Nice to meet you. My name is Matt and I'm from Australia.
I'm a technical discretionary trader with medium to long term hold times, while also holding down a full time job in IT. My aim is to eventually transition into trading full time.

I was lucky enough to catch an article on ZeroHedge shortly after the Jim Rogers' interview was made available where the audio was embedded in the article.
I started listening to it from within ZH and was hooked - from there I went across to the macrovoices site...registered...and subscribed to the podcast.

I listen to *many* financial podcasts, but I find the format of your's very refreshing and the content is fantastic!
Erik is so eloquent in his ability to take complex topics and deliver an easy to follow and comprehensive analysis without dumbing it down. Truly brilliant.

I'm also looking for a forum to 'talk shop' as I don't actually know anyone in the business personally.
Really keen on making macro voices my permanent home.
Hopefully my post will inspire others to introduce themselves too.

Keep up the good work, and I'll keep listening : )

All the best,
TraderMatt.

Welcome aboard, TraderMatt! Thanks so much for stopping by and introducing yourself in our intro thead.

The kind of information you provided about youself is exactly what we need to know. The long-term goal for Macro Voices goes well beyond the podcast itself. We want to create a community of sophisticated investors - finance pros, accredited private investors. high net worth individuals, family offices, etc.

Folks like yourself who are not professionals at this time but who have aspirations of "going pro" - whether that means trading your own money full-time instead of working a regular job or actually joining the industry as a trader are particularly interesting. We just booked a show on March 25 that should be right up your alley. The guest will be Jack Schwager, author of the infamous Market Wizards book series which hopefully you already consider must-read material.

But Jack's not coming on the show to talk about Market Wizards. He's coming to talk about FundSeeder, his new upstart which aims to help traders like yourself establish a documented and verified track record and to call attention to your trading talents. As I understand it, they will broker introductions between hedge funds who seek to hire additional traders and prospects who have proven their talent by trading their own accounts.

One word of caution - Jack says a major upgrade is coming to FundSeeder.com, and that the information online there right now may be out of date. Check back in early March for a possible update to FundSeeder.com.

Please let us know what other kinds of content you might enjoy on the show.

Best,
Erik

Hi Erik,

That sounds amazing! Jack Schwager is definitely right up my alley! I've actually met Jack Schwager in person when he was in Sydney for a conference a year or two back that was put on by CMC Markets.
At the time he mentioned his next project was FundSeeder, so I registered a while back and started to build a track record with my IB trading account, and I'm using a pool of hedge funds as my benchmark (such as Abraham Trading, Dunn Capital, Eckhardt Trading, Mulvaney Capital etc). However I must admit, once I registered for FundSeeder, I haven't visited the site again since - so I am super keen to hear how it has progressed and matured.

On a side note, the Market Wizards books (especially New Market Wizards) have been instrumental in my development, as I'm sure it has been for many traders. It has really provided the guidance and direction for helping me to get out of the 'beginners cycle' of trading and move towards a profitable and disciplined trader.

I'm sure whatever topics you cover with Jack will be interesting - I've listened to him on many podcasts - always very insightful - I especially enjoy hearing his views on market psychology.

Hi,
I'm Kevin from northern PA, a small individual investor.

I've listened to the first two podcasts and have been impressed !

I recommend Rick Rule of Sprott as a guest speaker.
Rick has been a guest on the Palisade Radio website, if you'd like a sample.

@Xriva - Welcome, Kevin! We love hearing from listeners, especially (but not limited to) when they've been impressed! ;)

Your recommendation of Rick Rule is a keen one, and I'm actually going to reach out to him this week about being interviewed in March or April. I'll keep you posted on any relevant developments.

Happy listening!

Dear all

My name is Christoph. I am an equitys analyst based in Germany. I love this show!!! Nathan and Erik are doing a wonderful job. I also see this oilcrisis as a huge opportunity to make a killing investment. I hope I will get the timing right. However, I found me a different way to profit from this oil bottom. Maybe I will present my idea to this board at a different thread. I am curious for your feedback and especially Erics.

Chris

Erik and Nathan. Congratulations.

I listen to financial podcasts and lectures while I work during the day and on weekends when I am working around the home, and have done so for a few years now. I have absorbed a LOT of financial information aurally. (I do read ~1-2 of hours per day too and the the odd book financial book).

You guys rock. The format, the frankness, the technical level, the amount of detail you give when you explore yours or your guests reasoning, the overall show quality. Just great.

I know you said recently that your show aspires to be what RealVisionTv is - and that is a fair comment - RealVisionTv is outstanding - but to my thinking, you guys are already operating in that band of quality.

Thank you for your outstanding work. It is a breath of fresh air.

As to who I am. Just a programmer in Australia. I came into a little money a few years ago, but I wanted to understand finance before I started to try to employ it. I didn't just want to blindly hand it somebody and 'see what happens'. So I decided to take some time to try to learn the rules of the game before I played.

I am enjoying the journey. I bought gold (my insurance policy) late last year when it dipped. I agree that, in US dollars, gold may well (most probably) dip again, but I am buying in Australian dollars. I don't think gold will be as cheap for me again as it was when I purchased late last year. (I think AUD will drop before gold does) - time will tell :)

Thank you again and my sincere best wishes for the continued success of your already outstanding show.
Ryan

@Batman - first of all, a warm welcome to the forums. We're hoping to build a home for thoughtful, inquisitive, mature investors, and I'm sure you'll fit right in.

I also have to thank you for your extremely generous compliments, and I'm so glad you're finding value in the show. We work hard to bring this program to you listeners, and it's great to know that we're not doing so in vain.

Your Gold purchase last year seems a sound one, and while we're on the subject, stay tuned for our upcoming shows with Jim Rickards and Rick Rule, both coming up in the next month. I'm certain they'll both have plenty to say about Gold.

Thanks for listening!

Erik and Nathan.

I am not a member of your target audience. Rather, I am a person in my late 50's clinging to the rapidly dwindling American middle class. I have come to realize that "buy and hold" is not an option if I have any hopes of a decent retirement. Therefore, I have spent the last several years learning all I can about markets in the hope of maintaining and growing my modest nest egg. This is all very new to me.

I have found a lot of really bad and jaded advice on the topic. One source I have come to trust is Palisade Radio, which I listen to regularly. It was there that I met Erik Townsend on a recent broadcast. I am really hooked on your expert and honest advice. I greatly appreciate this wonderful free service.

My only comment is that I hope you will not forget about "little guys" me. I am a novice swimming in a tank of sharks. Along with your expert advice to professional traders, I would be extremely grateful for some additional advice to us small-time investors on prudent steps to take in these turbulent times.

THANK YOU!!!
Paul

Hi Paul, and welcome aboard! We're glad to have you as a regular.

Just to clarify, we do try to organize things to appeal to both professional and retail audiences. Our general rule of thumb is that up through the guest interview, we keep things focused on our target audience of pro finance, high net worth, and other "sophisticated" investors, because after all, that's our target audience. But Nathan always listens to the guest interview with an ear toward "What about this might not be clear to the average retail guy", and then tries to ask me those questions. The idea is we want the show to appeal to the pros at least thru the end of the guest interview. Then they can stop listening if they get bored, and we try to use the end of the show to keep it interesting for retail.

We welcome feedback on this approach. We're trying to appeal to as many tastes as we can without losing our core focus, which is on more sophisticated investors. There are plenty of other investing podcasts that target the retail market.

Welcome aboard, Paul!

I'm young Oil & Gas Investment Banker with a passion for trading commodities and equities in my free time. I'm also absolutely fascinated with macroeconomics and central bank policy. I tend towards the Austrian economics point of views and a lot of what Macrovoices discusses regarding the errors of central bank thinking and policy resonate deeply with me.

I found Macrovoices through Mikael Syding, the European Hedge Fund Manager of the decade, who wrote about his view on the "Coming Bottom in Oil Prices" podcast here. mikaelsyding.com/oil-opportunities-and-t...ango-extraordinaire/

His blog has a great deal of quality information on investing and life in general. I also think he would be an excellent candidate to be a guest on the podcast.

Macrovoices is easily the best financial podcast available today and I share it with everyone who will listen. As someone working in the O&G industry I can say the "Coming Bottom in Oil Prices" podcast is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive view on the current situation that I have seen to date.

Thanks for all you do and looking forward to being a regular contributor to this forum.

@MichaelMedici,

Thanks for introducing yourself, and welcome aboard!

Thanks so much for your kind words as well. Nathan and I are committed to making Macrovoices the absolute best content on the Internet for our target audience.. We have no delusions of being good at explaining the difference between stocks and bonds to newbie retail investors. We're here to bring the same kind of quality, in-depth financial journalism that RealVision is delivering in the video format. Our differentiation is we will always be free. We always welcome your suggestions for how we can improve.

Best,
Erik

p.s. I'll go check out Mikael's site right now.

Hi all,

I am a university student from Canada and have been investing my own money over the last 5 years. My strategy has focused on long-term capital appreciation through large, quality blue-chip companies. I also have an interest in real estate, and have recently ventured into farmland as an alternative investment vehicle.

The podcasts I have listened to so far have been phenomenal. High quality content, extremely well conducted interviews, intelligent and focused insight, and thought-provoking discussions. Love it. In my opinion, it exceeds the quality of anything I see on television.

Keep up the great work. Looking forward to see where this goes.

Hello!

Army Engineer Captain, mechanical engineer and aspiring fund manager. I've been investing for 4 years now.

Born in Bermuda and moving back soon to set up my operation. Currently located in Seattle.

This podcast and information has been pivotal in developing my skills in this line of work.

I'm getting a great outlook on how the worlds economies work and where/how/what to invest in.

Cant thank you both enough for doing this. I wish the average person knew more about how the flow of wealth effected their everyday lives and societies.

Part of my obsession with the markets is to determine the true underlying causes of why we go to war and for what. Outside of the headlines. The real reasons.

Thanks all, you guys are true patriots.

Looking forward to this forum filling up !

LBL was my nickname at a defense contractor I worked at in the 1980's. They had a company-wide
PA system, which anybody could use. I detested my cubicle, though I managed to stay friends with
that cubicle mate.

I adopted a large workbench on the factory floor. There was one manufacturing engineer in particular
who was always paging me, and mis-pronouncing my name. Another engineer turned that mis-pronunciation
into a nickname, which ended up sticking.

It was a good job & company, one of the last vertically integrated companies in Silicon Valley (they made
most of the pieces of their primary products, radar tubes and the support hardware.)

Anyway, 30 years later, here I am just finishing up an 80 day wildfire prevention project (knock on wood.)

I will share some details about that in another thread.

As it turned out, I went to college during the late 70's, and I also was a child in 1965 when silver was taken
(mostly) out of US coinage. The silver I collected then was very helpful in the late '70's. There is a jeweler
in Palo Alto who bought most of my silver collection, which was very helpful in keeping student loan debt
to a minimum ($700, owed to my parents.)

I would describe that more as luck than prescience.

Today one of my primary interests store-of-value-wise, is Precious Metals.

Part of my personal situation is that I am vision impaired by way of a bad outcome from LASIK eye surgery.
That ended my corporate CAD career, and it also resulted in typing style that occasionally avoids the use
of capital letters (like ee cummings, I guess.)

Anyway, looking forward to intelligent discussion.

Sincere Regards,

LBL

This is Vinit, and I have been listening to Erik's interviews for a while now, starting from his regular appearances on financial sense show.
Though I got totally turned off by the financial sense show, I believe Erik provided some really valuable and honest opinions.

I lived in North America (Toronto, and various locations in the US) for about 21 years and came to the conclusion that it was no longer a place to be to raise my family, and decided to sell my IT consulting business and moved to Southern Europe in 2013. My only regret is that why I didn’t take the step years earlier. Currently, I trade FOREX on a full time basis, and it has been such a roller-coaster ride.

I love markets, macro-economic issues, and geopolitics, and I think this forum, and podcast are of a great value. I eagerly wait every Friday morning for the new episode….
Great job Erik and Nathan, and Thanks for such a great service!!!

Howdy Folks,

I've been listening to the podcast for a while (found ya'll through RVTV on twitter originally) and greatly appreciate the work. I am an entrepreneur based in Tokyo who recently went liquid, and have been investing in gold and gold mining since '06 or so. I have also taken positions in TX multi-family and Tokyo multi-family residential real estate which has positive yield, as both locations have positive demographics.

I am focused on providing passive income for myself and my family over the next 40 years, as I don't believe that I will ever be able to collect from social security.

Hello. I've recently discovered you on YouTube and quickly subscribed to your podcast. I'm hoping to learn and gain some comfort from where we have our investments. I'm a professional in Indiana, married with kids. I'm here to hopefully have sane conversations with people who realize the emperor is naked. It's getting frightening noting the level of insanity out there ;)

Hi, I recently found MacroVoices. Don't recall how, but sure glad i did. This podcast, and I listen to a lot, is the most educational and current that I have found. Fantastic and thank you.

I am in the UK, in my fifties and really see things at a turning point where I want to move from making an income from working to making an income from my assets. I figure this means educating myself in economics, finance and some business management topics. If I can be successful at this I don't see why I cannot continue for the next 30 years. Warren Buffet is still doing it in his eighties.

With this belief why wouldn't I see myself as if I was 20 again at the start of my first career?

Dusty said he found the show on YouTube. I just checked and there is a YouTube channel, but it is empty. Why don't you put the interviews on YouTube? Chris Martenson does this I have frequently followed links to his web site from his YouTube "videos" ( they are just audio podcasts with a static image.). There are a few people that have a set of more or less static charts that they display while doing a podcasts. Gordon Long comes to mind. That last one with Snider would have been a good one to add some charts.

Well I'm probably not telling you anything you haven't thought of already.

Hello all, I just joined your forum today, after recently discovering the excellent podcast. It is both comforting and distressing to hear so many renowned experts call B.S. on the fundamentals of the US economy. I am happy that I haven't been crazy for the past 8 years or, at least, that MacroVoices and many of its listeners share my lunacy.

Erik and Nathan, I wish you the best of success with this endeavor and hope that Erik is completely wrong about his war scenarios. It is interesting that in Europe the politicians are shameless enough to blame the public for any failure. I simply cannot imagine the next US President playing that card when folks get paid their pension in depreciated currency.
