Macro Voices Discussion Forum

The investment world is full of scam artists and con men, and one of their favorite tricks is to join an investment-related forum like this one, warm up to other users on that forum, then try to run some kind of scam on them. As expressed on the show, our aim is to make this a listener-driven program, so this thread should be used to suggest future guests and/or show topics, submit questions for future guests, as well as to let us know how we can improve the show, the website and the forums. We'll be doing all that we can to meet these requests, so please, don't be shy!

We look forward to hearing from you all.

What I would like to see is some sort of "risk meter" or a long/short meter in a given market whereby there'd be an arrow pointing up or down or whatever visuals you want to use.

Perhaps you could even use some of the actual data you yourself are using.

I don't expect extremely precise depictions, but maybe it could be there just to give one a general idea

Thanks for your suggestion, Peter!

To be clear, are you suggesting that we add some visuals, such as those that you've described, to the Macro Voices website, or perhaps somewhere in the forum, or are you recommending that we add a visual component to the podcast presentation itself?

First of all, thanks to the both of you for "going public" and starting this service. I've been a long time listener and follower of Erik's. As you do the "Fly on the Wall" podcasts, try to remember that not everyone knows all the abbreviations so try, at least once during the podcast, to use the complete term in the discussion (i.e. DUC - Drilled but Uncompleted?) Also, enlighten us on data sources to make better decisions or forecasts on macro trends as you go forward. You know the old saying...."Garbage in, Garbage out!". Thanks again, I really look forward to listening and putting the word out about your podcasts.

Great first show.

In regard to Art B, agree with Nathan, do not dumb it down. Maybe before the interview have a brief discussion of technical terms and mechanics you likely will be talking about so actual "interview" more understandable.

Future guests:
Felix Zulauf
Boone Pickens
Eric Janszen
Bron Suchecki
Jim Rickards
Fred Hickey

Kind words, amarkscpa. Appreciated! And another vote cast in the "Nathan's idea" box re: the Berman show.

You're not the first to mention providing a glossary or explanation of some of the abbreviations and more technical jargon. I'll talk with Erik about this idea.

We also appreciate the guest recommendations, and it looks like you and I are on the same page as far as future interview targets. We have a long and growing list of potential guests, but you've given me a couple of new ones here. Janszen may be a little tough as he seems to have fallen off the face of the Earth. Does anyone have any current info on Janszen?

Please remember to submit your questions for next week's special guest, Dr. Marc Faber!

I have considered making a separate thread for this purpose, but I figured that traffic will be so limited here initially that we may as well just keep it all in the suggestions thread for now. Let me know what you guys think.

Glad to see you come back Erik! That previous show you did has not been the same since you left. Looking forward to hearing you both on Friday mornings going forward. I like the format, where Erik can talk for the 1st part, and the guest for the 2nd part. Starting off with Jim Rogers is not too shabby! :)

I vote for Jim Rickards too.
A few other names for you down the road:
Doug Kass
Keith McCullough at Hedgeye
Rick Santelli
Mish Shedlock
Pedro Da Costa
Nassim Taleb
John Mauldin

You've offered some fantastic suggestions (quite a few we hadn't yet thought of) here and I've added them to our list of target guests. I'll keep you guys posted of new bookings so you can know what to look forward to.

Thanks Erik & Nathan - what a great idea to start this podcast!

I believe your motto to not dumb down things is spot on! Personally, this was the reason why I always enjoyed your weekly comments, Erik. For example, was there any other opportunity to learn about the collateral mining trade in the financial podcast universe? I don't think so.

The fly-on-the wall experiment sounds _really_ interesting! Perhaps you could listen to your recording and preface the discussion with a 10-15 min introduction in which you lay out the context and explain the jargon used? This would be a great learning exercise/education and help listeners to develop their own analytical skills.

On the interviewing side, I think a discussion between you and Jim Rickards or Eric Janszen could be intellectually extremely stimulating!

Good luck and please don't hesitate to experiment!

Hello, peter! We really appreciate that you're joining us on this journey, and feedback like this will always make the road a little smoother.

You're not the first to suggest creating a special segment to set up the "fly on the wall" episode. I'll be taking this suggestion to the top (Erik).

Rickards is definitely on our list, but no one seems to know where Janszen is these days. It's a shame too, as I agree he has been an incredible source of brilliant commentary over the years. Who knows, maybe he'll resurface one of these days and we can work with him...fingers crossed.

Some tips for individual investors on for example, how to short the high yield bond market could be helpful. A brief search turns up quite a few ETFs which short treasuries, but precious few for the junks. If we believe that the treasuries will rally in a junk crisis, it'd be great to have techniques at hand to leverage the short side on the junk.

@yaffstone Thank you for listening and contributing to the forums!

As to your specific comment on high-yield bonds, I believe Erik mentions a couple of junk bond ETFs on the show in JNK and HYG.

More generally speaking, we've got some ideas planned for the future in which we'll be able to (legally) speak in greater depth about specific trading opportunities. I've taken note of your suggestions and we'll keep you updated as these new ideas come together.

I like the suggestions so far, and I like upcoming guest Arthur Berman.

I'm hoping you can identify some energy experts that may not have received wide exposure, because I feel particularly deficient in that area.

Finally, and this may be a challenge to assemble, but how about a theme month? You could have all guests with the initials RR:

Rick Rule, Robert Rapier, George RR Martin, and Ronald Reagan.

@Arthur Itarian Welcome to the forums, and thank you so much for listening!

Our listeners will become increasingly aware that energy, and more specifically crude oil, will be some of the primary focuses of the MacroVoices podcast, both because energy literally powers our world and affects all markets, and because this is an area of focus in Erik's work. Assuming the Berman episode goes well and is well received by listeners like you, we'll look to find more experts in the energy sector to interview, regardless of how much name recognition they bring with them, so there's a good chance we end up featuring some of the lesser known participants in the energy space.

As far as the "themed month" suggestion, I like it, but not so keen on digging up the remains of ex-governors of the great state of California. ;)

@nevadan,

Grant Williams is already booked in April. Kyle Bass is definitely on our list, but we don't have a connection to Kyle and our sources tell us he doesn't grant interviews unless there's a personal introduction first.

Very glad to see Erik back on the air -- on the Puplava News Hour I always fast forwarded to Erik's segment and listened to that first, and I haven't listened at all since Erik left. Having Jim Rogers and Marc Faber as the first two guests also really resonates with me, in fact Jim Rogers' books and interviews had a significant influence on my decision to relocate to Asia too (Philippines in my case). I also very much liked the extended segment of Erik's own views before the main interview, I hope you keep doing that.
Anyway, suggestion: I like the idea mentioned at the end of the Jim Rogers interview of recording an actual session between Erik and his petroleum industry advisor, I really appreciate the non-dumbed down approach that you're taking. And my suggestion is: record the interview as is, and publish it that way; then also go back through it and pause and put in explanations of concepts and terms that are too "inside baseball", and publish that too. That way listeners can choose which one they want to listen to, and if they get stuck on the "hard core" version they can always switch to the one with explanations.
Keep up the great work, looking forward to a lot more great podcasts.

@jsesr Welcome! We're happy to be providing you with renewed access to the mind of Erik, and we have every intention of continuing to bring you his commentary in the first part of our show, followed by a feature guest interview (unless our listeners tell us to do otherwise!).

You echo the sentiments of many of our listeners regarding the Berman show. Erik and I are working on how exactly to provide supplementary material to listeners to help make sense of any overly technical aspects of a "fly-on-the-wall" style feature discussion.

Thanks for your listening to the podcast and a special thanks for stopping by the forums and taking time to offer suggestions and encouragement - both will be helpful going forward. Please keep communicating with us and we'll do all that we can to continue to bring you great content every week.

Thanks for this great new podcast!

I'd like to suggest a question for Marc Faber - After reading his most recent Gloom, Boom, and Doom Report, one big question comes to mind for me, given my living in Mexico; I'd love to hear Faber's thoughts on why exactly Asian EMs (South Korea is one example he focuses on in the newsletter) have done so well compared to other areas of the world, particularly Latin America. When you see South Korean GDP rising from $300/capita in the 70's to over $25,000/capita less than 50 years later, you have to wonder what exactly has gone so wrong in places like Mexico which, just like South Korea, started from very low per capita GDP figures in the 70's and enjoyed similar wage competitiveness. Mexican per capita GDP was reported in
2013 at $10,307.28.

I'd be curious to know whether he thinks this was a product of poor leadership and corruption leading to foreign investor fears and retarding growth, or are there other factors, cultural or otherwise, holding back Latin American economies.

If you could ask him this on the air that would be great! Thank you again!

@DDcpa Welcome to the forums, and thanks so much for submitting your question for Dr. Faber!

We're compiling a list now of potential questions for Faber and we intend for at least one or two of these to be read on the air, giving credit to the forum user/listener that suggested the question.

Keep the questions coming, everyone, and if you have an opinion on whether we should use this "Suggestions" thread for this purpose, or create a separate thread for each upcoming show, do speak up!

Thanks, Erik and Nathan for doing this. It's a great service. I've followed Erik since I first heard him arguing against hyperinflation in the Two Beers with Steve podcast some years ago. He sounded very reasonable. I even suggested Financial Sense people to have you as a guest when they were still on the side of inflation and was glad to see you working with them a couple of years later. Too bad it didn't work out, but I guess things actually worked out for the better.

I also suggest having Martin Armstrong. One thing I would like to suggest is creating a format for debate. Like I know he believes there isn't a currency war and of course Jim Rickards is on the opposite side. I know it would be nearly impossible to get these two to debate each other. But maybe have them in different occasions and kind of put out certain questions mentioning the other guy's point of view to see if they can answer back. They both give the vibe that they think they are really smart and are very sure of their stance. And objectively, they are smart people.

On a specific note, could you ask Marc Faber about his view on the near future of SE Asia and Thailand in particular since I have family there and plan to move there in a few years? Does he see a deeper crisis looming in this region? Will the Thai Baht or other regional currencies continue to fall?

Thanks so much. More feedback coming in the following weeks.

Please let me suggest that you take a look at the "Continuing Education..." methodology that Russ Roberts at Econtalk.org uses.

Maybe something like that could be a platform for listeners to increase their understanding of the "fly on the wall" issues MacroVoices intends to cover
